If your business is using different social media tools to promote its products and services, which have proven to be the most successful to date?

Whether it is crafting business profiles and relationships on LinkedIn, sharing pertinent company information on Facebook fan pages or tweeting about the company’s latest products and services, more businesses need to be getting the message that social media can be a bonus to their communications efforts.

A pair of recently released reports indicates that Facebook remains the social media king, MySpace is falling faster than someone bungee jumping, and people in general are spending more time being social media players.

According to recent analysis from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 42 percent of the U.S. adult population is using social networking sites, up from 26 percent in 2008. The average age of adult users has changed from 33 in 2008 to 38 in 2010.

Other Pew stats show:

According to recent numbers from ComScore, MySpace remains the second-most popular location, with just under 35 million users per month, although its audience numbers have been dropping over the last year.

Meantime, LinkedIn had 33.4 million visitors for May 2011, Twitter came in at 27 million and Tumblr continued its aggressive growth with 10.7 million. In fact, all three sites had the largest-ever traffic in May 2011.

Make It Your Business to be Social

So as individuals digest these numbers for personal reasons, what can businesses take away from the data?

The facts are simple, social media is here to stay for the foreseeable future and businesses that are not partaking in it are missing out on the rewards.

Customers in large numbers have indicated in surveys that they want companies to be accessible via social media, so those that are not are either accidentally or purposefully turning a blind eye to potential sales and referrals.

If customers are having positive things to say about an experience with your company, you should be sharing it on Facebook, tweeting about it on Twitter and linking up with others on LinkedIn to share the good news. If they have some concerns or complaints regarding your company, you can also utilize social media to get the word out quickly of what went wrong, how it can be fixed and why you care in the first place.

Employers should also be encouraging their employees to spread the word about the business via social media.

Whether it is through an on-site social media head or through individual employees, positive news regarding the company can spread like wildfire on the Internet, with your employees helping social media sites to fan the flames.

If your company isn’t using social media to help spread the word, it is likely going to get burned by the competition over time.
